Overview
Design leaders often spend as much time on people as on design: hiring, reviewing work and planning with product and engineering. Consortia recruits Heads of Design, UX and Product Design, design directors, UX leads and design managers.
We recruit design leaders across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE, through Permanent Recruitment and Contract Recruitment. Where a business needs senior design leadership for a few days a week, see Fractional UX. For the most senior appointments, we run a retained UX executive search.
How we recruit UX leaders
Many of the design leadership roles we have worked on recently are still very hands-on. A Head of Design may be the only permanent designer for the first year, owning research, UX and the detail of the work. We agree early how much of the week goes on design and how much on leading, because that decides who will be interested.
Reporting lines are often one of the first things candidates ask about. Many design leaders report to a Chief Product Officer or a CPTO, and they want to know how much say design will have in product decisions. We will get the answers to these sorts of questions clarified before anyone is approached.
One recent client, an established business moving to a product platform, needed its first design lead to take on all of design and represent it with the leadership team. A brief like that needs someone with the confidence to build a function, as well as the UX itself.
Most strong design leaders are in work, so may need to be tactfully approached.

Design leadership recruitment insights
Design leadership roles are broader than they were, and few are advertised. Much of this market moves through direct approaches.
Leaders are being asked to deliver more with similar teams. Those who can show clear business results tend to do best, which makes evidence of results worth asking for early.
Demand for experienced designers is still healthy, particularly at senior level but movement of candidates between roles is less frequent.
Permanent Recruitment
Permanent hires for specialist and leadership roles across technology teams.
Contract Recruitment
Day-rate and fixed-term specialists for projects, change programmes and interim cover.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Head of UX, a Design Manager and a Design Director?
A Design Manager usually leads a group of designers, focusing on people, quality and delivery. A Head of UX or Head of Design typically owns design across the business, including standards, team shape and how design works with product. A Design Director often oversees design across several areas or brands in a larger organisation. Titles vary, so we look at actual scope.
How do you assess a design leader beyond their portfolio?
We focus on leadership. We ask how they have grown a team, hired well, handled underperformance and kept standards high under pressure. We also ask how they have made the case for design with senior stakeholders. A strong portfolio shows craft. Conversations about people and decisions show whether someone can lead.
Should a design manager still be designing?
It depends on the team. In smaller teams, many design managers are player-coaches who still take on design work. In larger teams, managing people, hiring and quality usually takes most of their time. Candidates weigh this carefully, so being clear in the brief about the balance saves time on both sides.
Why do design leaders turn roles down?
Common reasons include design being treated as a delivery service rather than part of product decisions, no clear budget for research or tools, an unclear reporting line and office expectations that do not suit them. Package matters too. Experienced leaders tend to choose roles where they can see real influence, so it helps to be open about how design is valued.
