Overview
A product engineer is a software engineer who owns the outcome of what they build, as well as the code. They talk to users, read the data, decide what is worth building and then build it. In a small team, that removes much of the back-and-forth between engineers and product managers.
The difference between a product engineer and a software engineer is mostly one of scope. Product engineers are usually full stack and comfortable starting from a problem, without a finished specification. They are judged on whether a feature gets used, as well as whether it shipped.
The title is still settling. It appears as senior, staff or founding product engineer, and many people doing the job are still called full stack or software engineers. AI product engineer is emerging as a title of its own, usually for engineers building AI-native products with a large language model (LLM) at the centre.
We recruit product engineers for SaaS and software companies, on permanent and contract terms, across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE. We have recruited into both product and engineering teams since 2010. That lets us see the role from both sides: what a head of product expects from it, and what an engineering lead will test.
How we recruit product engineers
Every brief sets the balance differently which needs to be settled early. One client needs a deeply technical engineer who can make product decisions without direction. Another needs someone who will speak to customers and move between discovery and delivery.
We ask what a candidate changed: the trade-offs they made, the work they challenged, what they did once a feature reached users. That shows whether they shaped a product or delivered decisions made elsewhere. The stack often matters less now too. Some clients will train a strong engineer from Laravel into another backend technology, or from React into Vue, provided the engineering fundamentals and product mindset are there.
Most of these roles are hands-on individual contributor positions, whatever the seniority. Even at lead level, candidates need to show they still build and solve technical problems day to day.
Interview formats vary, and tend to test practical engineering ability more than set coding exercises. They can include whiteboard sessions, full-build engineering challenges, architecture trade-off discussions or open system design sessions. We make sure candidates know the format and what is expected beforehand, and debrief with them straight afterwards.
Few product engineer hires come through job adverts. We search our engineering, product and UX networks directly, and often find engineers who already build and own products without the product engineer title. We review every profile ourselves. By the time someone reaches your shortlist, we know what they have built, the decisions they made and how they balance technical quality with getting a good product to users.

Product Engineer recruitment insights
Demand for product engineers has grown since around 2024. Many companies now run leaner teams, where engineers own features and have more say in product direction.
AI has sped this up. In our conversation with Bruce Pannaman of 9fin, he described work that once took two engineers two weeks now taking one engineer a day or two. When building gets that quick, the harder question is what is worth building. Engineers are expected to understand the customer problem and make sensible calls on it. A combination that once looked rare is becoming a normal expectation in many teams.
Finding people who can do both is harder. Product thinking is easy to claim and harder to evidence, especially when someone has used it under a different title or inside a standard software engineering role.

Frequently asked questions
What is a product engineer?
A product engineer is a software engineer who takes responsibility for the product outcome as well as the code. They speak to users, look at usage data, help decide what to build, and then build it across the stack.
What is the difference between a product engineer and a software engineer?
Both build software. A product engineer also takes ownership of what gets built and why. They talk to users, question requirements, make trade-offs and follow a feature once it reaches customers. A software engineer may be highly skilled but work mainly from decisions made elsewhere. The title varies between companies, so we look at how someone has worked, not the label.
Do product engineers replace product managers?
In most teams, no. Product engineers reduce the back-and-forth between developers and product managers, and take on more of the smaller product decisions themselves. Product managers usually still own the wider direction, discovery and priorities. Some very early teams do run without a product manager for a while, relying on founders and product engineers instead.
Where do strong product engineers usually come from?
Often from small product teams and start-ups, where engineers had to talk to customers and make product calls. Others have worked on developer tools, internal platforms or their own products. Many do not use the title product engineer, which is one reason these hires rarely come through adverts. We search across both our engineering and product networks.
What kind of company benefits most from product engineers?
Lean teams that ship often and want engineers close to customers tend to get the most from them. That includes early-stage and scaling SaaS businesses, and companies building developer tools. In settings where detailed specifications and sign-off shape most of the work, the extra product ownership may be harder to use.
