Overview

Mobile is where many products meet their users most often, and small differences in quality are felt immediately. Consortia recruits mobile app developers across iOS, Android and React Native, from a product's first mobile hire through to established app teams, on permanent and contract terms.

Native and cross-platform are different searches. A Swift or Kotlin specialist, a React Native or Flutter engineer and a developer who moves between them bring different strengths, and the right choice depends on the product and the team around it. Our work has ranged from an Android specialist for Bose to a cross-platform developer for a trading app at Marex Spectron.

How we recruit mobile developers

The platform decision comes first. If the product is native, we search for iOS engineers and Android engineers separately. If it is cross-platform, we look for people who have shipped in that framework. Where a client has not decided, we talk it through at the brief stage, because it changes who we approach.

Senior mobile briefs tend to be precise. A principal iOS role may need Swift and SwiftUI plus experience in a particular sector. An Android lead may need Kotlin, Jetpack Compose and a decade of shipped apps. Before we start, we agree which requirements are fixed and which can flex.

We assess candidates on shipped work: app store history, performance on real devices and how they handle each platform's constraints. On React Native and Expo roles, we look at what they have taken to production and how comfortable they are with the backend services behind the app. Some come from a front end background in React, so we check who has shipped a mobile app before.

Technical assessments for mobile roles are often hands-on, with a timed exercise in the platform's own tools. We make sure candidates know the format and length in advance, so the result reflects what they can do.

Office expectations vary, and some mobile teams are in the office five days a week, so we raise it on the first call. We also ask whether a candidate is open to contract work, permanent work or both. When a permanent hire is urgent, we discuss whether an experienced contractor could cover the work while the search continues. We recruit mobile developers across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should we build our app natively or cross-platform?

It depends on the product. Native development in Swift or Kotlin suits apps where performance, device features or platform polish matter most. Cross-platform approaches such as React Native let one team cover iOS and Android, which suits many products well. The choice shapes who you hire, so it is worth settling before the search.

What should we look for in a mobile developer's work?

Shipped apps are the best evidence. Look at app store history, ratings and how the app performs on real devices. Ask how they handled each platform's constraints, release processes and crashes in production. A candidate who can talk through those details has usually done the work themselves.

Should our first mobile hire be senior?

Usually, yes. The first mobile developer tends to set the app's architecture, release process and relationship with the app stores. Those decisions are hard to undo later. A more junior developer can do well once those foundations exist, but may struggle to set them up alone.

Can web developers move into React Native?

A React background helps, and many make the move successfully. Mobile still brings its own challenges, including native modules, performance on older devices and app store releases. If the team has no one who has shipped a mobile app before, hiring at least one experienced mobile engineer is often the safer choice.
