Overview

Business analysts help turn business problems into clear, workable plans. They understand what a business is trying to achieve, work out what is really needed, and give delivery teams the detail to move things forward.

Consortia recruits business analysts across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE, on permanent and contract terms. We place BAs into product teams, transformation programmes and data projects.

How we recruit business analysts

Business analysts earn their keep in almost any change a business makes. Briefs increasingly ask for analysts who are comfortable with data and product ways of working, not just documentation.

Every search starts with the role itself. The line between business analyst and product owner is blurring, so we check early which one you need. The answer can change the title, the pay and the people you reach.

We then look at where the analyst will work. In regulated sectors, we focus on people who have worked under similar rules. Where AI is part of delivery, we look for analysts who have written specifications for AI-built software and tested what came back.

Contract work makes up a large share of the BA market, so we talk through the engagement early. A defined programme of change often suits a contractor. A role that will shape how the team works over time usually suits a permanent hire.

Throughout, we look for the basics that haven't changed: clear communication, and user stories and epics a team can build from.

Business Analyst recruitment insights

Demand for strong business analysts has risen. AI can now turn a well-written specification into working software. That gives more weight to someone who understands both the user and the technical detail. They write the functional document the software is built from, and test the result before it moves on.

In some organisations a business analyst used to be a nice to have. With the speed of AI adoption, the role is becoming central to delivery. A good BA understands development, testing and user needs, which is also blurring the line between business analysts and product owners.

Domain experience is becoming more important, and regulated sectors want people who have worked in another regulated environment. As with product roles, commercial experience with LLMs pushes up both demand and pay.

The wider UK market shows how much of this work is project-based. Business analysis is one of the few tech roles with more contract adverts than permanent ones, while across tech as a whole permanent adverts outnumber contract by about two to one. Contract day rates have held steady and risen outside London.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a business analyst and a product owner?

A business analyst works out what the business actually needs and turns it into clear requirements. A product owner decides what the team builds next and in what order. The roles overlap in agile teams, and some people move between them. As a rough guide, the business analyst clarifies the problem and the product owner makes the priority calls.

Do we need a business analyst in an agile product team?

It depends on how complex the work is. If the product has many stakeholders, detailed business rules, regulation or system integrations, a business analyst can save a lot of rework. In a small team with a simple domain, a product owner or product manager may cover the analysis themselves. We can help you judge which situation you are in.

Which skills should we ask for in a business analyst?

Start with the core: running discovery sessions, mapping processes, writing clear requirements and handling stakeholders with fixed views. Briefs increasingly add comfort with data, such as basic SQL or working from reports, and experience in product teams rather than only project documentation. Keep the list short. A long list of tools narrows the pool without telling you much.

Are business analysts usually hired on contract?

Many are, particularly for change programmes and system implementations with a clear end date. Business analysts are among the roles in steady contract demand. Permanent hires make more sense when the analyst sits in an ongoing product team and builds knowledge of the business over time. We recruit on both terms.
