Overview

Business intelligence (BI) helps companies understand what's happening across their business and make better decisions. BI developers and analysts turn data into reports and dashboards that teams can use every day. The aim is to make information easy to find, understand and act on.

Consortia recruits BI specialists for companies across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE. These include BI developers, analytics engineers and BI leaders. Technical skills matter, but they’re only part of the picture. We look at how someone works with others, understands the data and turns it into reporting people can actually use.

How we recruit business intelligence specialists

Not every BI team is missing the same thing. Some need a BI developer to build dashboards and reporting from scratch. Others already have that in place and need a data analyst to explain what the numbers mean. Some need an analytics engineer to make the data behind the reporting more reliable.

We agree where the role sits before starting the search. That also helps us see whether some of the work belongs with a data engineer instead.

We also ask candidates about work they’ve done before. Who used the report? What did they need from it? Did anything change because of the findings? That usually tells us more than a list of tools. Someone strong in Power BI can often move into Tableau, so Consortia checks how much the exact software really matters.

Most BI specialists Consortia places come through direct search and existing relationships. That includes two hard-to-fill QlikView roles for Bupa and contract BI hires for Merlin Entertainments. Consortia recruits BI specialists on permanent and contract terms.

Business Intelligence recruitment insights

BI skills are now spread across more data roles. Power BI still appears regularly in hiring, especially across analyst jobs. That means businesses don’t always need a dedicated BI hire.

More attention is also going into the data behind the dashboard. AI can help build charts and write queries quickly. But poor data still gives poor answers. Teams now spend more time checking whether the numbers can be trusted.

That has changed many BI briefs. Dashboard building may only be one part of the role. The same person might also clean data, define measures or improve reporting. More technical data work may sit with a data engineer instead.

Getting that split right early can save a lot of confusion later.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a BI developer and a data analyst?

A BI developer builds the data models, dashboards and reporting layers that people across the business use. A data analyst uses data to answer specific questions and recommend what to do next. In smaller teams one person often does both. As reporting needs grow, it usually helps to separate building the reporting from interpreting it.

What is an analytics engineer?

An analytics engineer sits between data engineering and analysis. They turn raw data in the warehouse into clean, tested and documented models that analysts and dashboards can rely on, often using SQL and tools such as dbt. They bring software engineering habits, like version control and testing, to reporting work.

Does it matter whether a BI candidate knows Power BI or Tableau?

Less than many briefs suggest. A strong BI developer can usually learn a second tool fairly quickly. What takes longer to learn is data modelling, understanding how metrics should be defined and building reports people trust. Deep experience in one tool can matter for complex work, such as advanced Power BI data models, so it is worth saying when that applies.

How do we get people to actually use our reporting?

Usually with fewer, better dashboards and agreed definitions for the numbers that matter. When teams see different figures for the same metric, they stop trusting any of them. A strong BI lead works with the teams who use the reporting, asks what a metric is really measuring and retires reports nobody opens.
