Overview

Product has been at the centre of Consortia's work since 2010, from a start-up's first Head of Product to Chief Product Officers in established businesses. Our executive search service is built for the hires that carry the most risk. Usually that is the Head of Product, VP or CPO a business cannot afford to get wrong. Sometimes it is a first product manager who will set how the team works, or a specialist whose mix of skills few people share.

Great product leaders are not interchangeable. Some drive growth, some bring order to messy teams, some are right for a Series A and wrong for a scaled organisation even when the title matches. We work closely with founders, boards and senior stakeholders to define what right actually means, beyond the job spec, then run a tight, deliberate search against a curated network rather than active applicants. Our Executive Search page explains how our retained process works.

How we recruit product executives

At leadership level very few roles are advertised, and expectations have sharpened: companies now hire for a specific mix of stage fit, leadership style and product thinking, with a real understanding of AI increasingly expected. Our job is to reduce noise, not add to it, bringing the clarity that avoids a costly mis-hire. We work across SaaS, marketplaces, fintech and AI-led products, in the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

How product leadership packages are put together

Chief Product Officer means different things in different businesses. The role at a 40-person scale-up has little in common with the same title at a listed company. Pay follows the role, so a salary table here would not be useful.

What shapes the package

  • The mix. Senior packages combine base salary, bonus and equity or a long-term incentive plan. The balance matters as much as the total.
  • Ownership. Venture-backed, private equity-backed and listed businesses reward leaders in different ways.
  • Scope. Some product leaders own product alone. Others also hold design, data or a P&L.
  • What the person leaves behind. Unvested equity, a pending bonus and a long notice period all affect what it takes to move someone.
  • Location. Office expectations and where the candidate is based can widen or narrow the field.

A benchmark for your role

Before a search begins, we benchmark the package against the current market for that specific role. You'll know where your offer sits and who it is likely to attract.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should we hire a Chief Product Officer or a Head of Product?

A Chief Product Officer usually sits on the executive team, owns product across the business and often reports to the CEO. A Head of Product typically leads the product managers and may report to a CPO, CTO or CEO. The right choice depends on the size of the product organisation and whether product needs a seat at the executive table.

Can a retained search suit a product hire below leadership level?

Sometimes. A first product manager in a start-up can shape how product works for years, so the hire may deserve the same care as a senior appointment. A retained search can also help when a role needs an unusual mix, such as deep payments or AI platform knowledge alongside strong product skills, and only a few people fit. It costs more than other routes, so we will tell you if an exclusive search would work just as well.

How do we know which kind of product leader suits our stage?

Start with what the business needs next. Some leaders are strongest at driving growth, others at bringing order to a busy team, and others at scaling a function that already works. Someone who thrived at Series A may struggle in a large organisation, even with the same title. We work with founders and boards to define that before any approach is made.

How much AI understanding should a product executive have?

Enough to shape product direction and make sound investment decisions around AI. That usually means understanding what AI can and cannot do well, the data and cost involved, and the risks for customers. They do not need to build models. They do need to ask the right questions of the people who do.

Who should interview candidates for a senior product role?

Usually the CEO or founder, the senior engineering leader and someone on the commercial side. A board member or investor may join for a CPO appointment. It helps to agree before the process starts who makes the final decision, what each interviewer is assessing and how quickly feedback will come back. Senior candidates notice when a process feels unclear.
