Overview

Backend engineers deal with the work that keeps products running. That can include data, security, performance and the systems behind the product.AI tools have sped up parts of software work and raised what teams expect, but the deep technical work still needs experienced engineers, and that is where Consortia recruits.

We started placing Java developers in London and grew into Python, .NET, Ruby and event-driven stacks as hiring needs widened, and now cover backend roles across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE on permanent, contract and executive terms. We work in stack-specific verticals rather than broad groups, which keeps our consultants close to the real skills each team needs and lets us assess engineers, seniors and architects with accuracy.

How we recruit backend developers

Backend briefs often arrive labelled as full stack. Many turn out to be 80 or 90 per cent backend, with some front end work alongside. We agree that split with the hiring manager before we approach anyone, because it changes who the right person is.

Clients are often more flexible on the exact language or framework than the job advert suggests. A strong engineer may be able to move into PHP, Symfony or another Java framework.

What matters more is the kind of systems they have worked on before. Has the engineer dealt with high traffic, services that depend on each other, or systems that cannot afford much downtime? We ask candidates to talk through real examples, what went wrong and how they fixed it.

We also ask how much of their recent time went on writing code. Engineers stepping back from a lead role are often a good fit for hands-on positions. Clients want to know the real split, so we find out early.

Salary against the approved band, notice period, office days and visa sponsorship are all settled on the first call. For remote roles across Europe, that includes whether the candidate can contract through their own company. Many of our backend processes use a conversational technical interview rather than a live coding test, and candidates know the format before they apply.

Backend Developer recruitment insights

Backend hiring in the UK is steady, and demand is strongest at senior level. Most backend jobs are advertised simply as software engineer or senior developer roles.

AI has changed what employers test for more than how many people they hire. Most developers now use AI tools, and many say the answers are often nearly right but not quite. Interviews increasingly look at how someone checks and fixes that work, and how they think about systems under real use.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should we hire for a specific language or strong backend skills in general?

It depends on how deep the work goes. Performance tuning or complex framework work often needs real depth in that ecosystem. For most roles, a strong engineer can move between similar languages, such as Java, Kotlin and C#, faster than they can learn a new domain or scale of system. Being flexible on language can widen the shortlist noticeably.

What should a backend interview test?

The work the person will actually do. That usually means system design at a scale close to yours, data modelling, trade-offs between approaches and how they would debug a production problem. Puzzle-style tests unrelated to the job tend to filter out experienced engineers who have little patience for them.

Do we need a solutions architect or a senior backend engineer?

A senior backend engineer designs and builds within a system, and spends most of their time delivering. An architect works across systems, setting standards, planning integrations and guiding several teams, usually with less hands-on coding. Smaller teams rarely need a dedicated architect. Larger organisations with many connected systems often do.

Can we still hire backend developers for remote roles?

Yes, and remote-first roles still attract passive candidates who would not move otherwise. Hybrid is now the norm, though, and location matters more than it did. Two or three office days tends to keep a reasonable pool. Asking for four or five days a week can narrow it considerably, especially for senior engineers.
