“Consortia have come through for me again and again: my first Head of Product role, strong PMs for my team, salary benchmarking and contract work. Can't rate them highly enough.”
Duncan M. · Head of Product, SaaS scaleup
Overview
Two Heads of Product can share a job title and very little else. One is building a first team in a start-up. Another is running several teams inside a large organisation. We recruit across the full range of product leadership: Product Lead, Head of Product, Director of Product and Chief Product Officer.
We have worked in product hiring since 2010. Many of the product managers and owners we placed early in their careers are now the leaders we place. Those relationships give us access to experienced people who are not looking, but will take a call from us about the right role. It is often why clients bring us the harder leadership searches.
How we recruit product leaders
We look closely at what someone has actually led: the type and stage of the business, the state of the product when they joined and the decisions they personally owned. That might be setting direction, building or reshaping a team, replacing legacy systems or taking an early product into production.
We also test the evidence behind the usual leadership language. If someone says they are data-led, we ask which decision the data changed. If they describe themselves as strategic and hands-on, we look at what they personally took from discovery through to launch.
Candidates hear the practical detail early: team size, how much is already built, office days, salary and notice period. Everyone on the shortlist knows what they would be walking into.
We approach people directly and can benchmark salaries for the role. We recruit product leaders on permanent terms and through Fractional Product Leadership. When a role needs a fully retained search, we run it through Product Executive Search. We work across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

Product Leadership recruitment insights
Some of the leadership briefs we see no longer separate product from technology. Combined titles such as chief product and technology officer are becoming more common, usually where one person is expected to set product direction and make the technical calls behind it.
That kind of profile comes from a small pool: heads of product who stayed close to engineering, and platform owners in larger organisations who want more ownership. Few have done both at a senior level. Those who move usually want ownership, a team to build or a faster pace than a large or changing organisation allows.
Founders and boards say they want a leader who will challenge them. The ones who do it well bring evidence, such as what people actually use and the cost of switching priorities. They leave the decision with the person who owns it.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Product Lead, Head of Product and Director of Product?
The titles vary widely between companies. A Product Lead often manages a product area or a small team while staying hands-on. A Head of Product usually leads the product managers across the business. A Director of Product may oversee several product areas in a larger organisation. We look at the scope someone actually held, not the title on the CV.
Should our product leader also own technology?
Some briefs now combine the two, often where a founder built the first version and the business needs it made scalable and secure. People who have done both at a senior level are scarce. They tend to be heads of product who stayed close to engineering, or platform owners from larger organisations. It is worth testing early how much architecture experience the role really needs.
How do we find a product leader who will challenge the founder?
Many founders say they want someone who will push back. The candidates who stand out can explain how they do it. They bring evidence, such as what customers actually use or the cost of switching priorities, and they leave the final decision with the person who owns it. We ask candidates for real examples of disagreeing well.
Should a product leader still be hands-on?
In smaller businesses, usually yes. A leader with a small team will often need to run discovery or write specifications themselves. In larger organisations the job shifts towards setting direction and developing people. Many candidates describe themselves as both, so we ask what they personally took from discovery through to launch.
When should we use executive search for a product leader?
When the role is senior, the pool is small or the appointment needs to stay confidential. Most Chief Product Officer and VP hires fall into that group. A Head of Product search can often run as a standard permanent search, unless earlier attempts have not worked. We can advise on the right route once we understand the brief.
