Overview

Designers spend much of their time on small decisions: what goes on a screen, what gets left off, and what happens when someone taps the wrong thing. Consortia recruits the designers who get those decisions right: UX designers, UI designers and UX/UI designers, along with interaction designers, visual designers and design systems specialists.

Consortia has recruited designers since 2010, on permanent and contract roles in the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE. Some clients are hiring their first designer. Others are growing an established team or bringing in a contractor for a specific piece of work.

Where one person will run a product from research through to the finished interface, see our product designers page. For dedicated research roles, see UX researchers. Where the work reaches into code, a UX engineer may be the better hire.

How we recruit UX designers

UX designer roles can vary a lot. One team may need someone to lead research and shape user flows. Another may need stronger UI skills on a product that already works. A third may need help building or improving a design system.

Consortia agrees that balance with the hiring manager before starting the search. That helps us decide whether the team needs a broad UX designer or someone more specialised.

The portfolio tells us a lot. We look for work close to the brief, a similar product, a similar problem and a clear explanation of what the designer did themselves. For a first design hire, we may look for someone who has built a design system and worked without a wider design team around them.

Contract UX work can move quickly. A project may last six weeks or three months, often remotely, with someone needed within a fortnight. We check availability, day rate and contract setup on the first call.

Our Contract Recruitment page explains how Consortia handles that process.

For permanent roles, salary, location and office day preferences vs expectations are discussed early. Design roles range from fully remote to fully on site, and that drastically changes who will consider them.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is the UX hiring market quieter right now?

Yes. UX and design hiring is considerably more selective than it was during the rapid product-team growth of previous years. We're seeing fewer businesses build large standalone UX teams and more scrutiny around what a new design hire needs to own. In some organisations, UX, UI and product design responsibilities are also being brought together into broader Product Designer roles.

That doesn't mean UX has disappeared. It means businesses are being more deliberate about when they need dedicated research or design expertise and when those responsibilities can sit within a broader product team.

What is the difference between an interaction designer and a visual designer?

An interaction designer focuses on how a product behaves: flows, states, feedback and how people move through tasks. A visual designer focuses on how it looks: layout, typography, colour and brand. Many UX and product designers cover both. As teams grow, hiring for distinct strengths in each becomes more common.

Should UX designers be hired on contract or permanently?

Contract designers suit defined work, such as a redesign, a launch, a new feature set or cover during a busy period. Permanent designers suit ongoing product work, where knowledge of the users and the product builds over time. We benchmark both salaries and day rates, so you can compare the options before deciding.

What does a design systems designer do?

They build and maintain the shared components, patterns and guidelines that keep a product consistent. They work closely with front end engineers so design and code stay in step. The role becomes worth a dedicated hire when several teams are designing for the same product and inconsistencies start to slow everyone down.
