Overview
Strong data foundations support everything from reporting and customer insight to AI and product work. Without reliable systems, even the best tools struggle to deliver. Consortia recruits data engineers across data engineering, analytics engineering, data platforms, ML infrastructure anddata leadership.
When you need to hire data engineers, the strongest candidates rarely come through a job advert. Many aren't actively looking. Consortia approaches them directly, using market knowledge and an established network across the UK, Europe, North America and the UAE. Working across data, product, engineering and AI also gives Consortia a wider view of candidate availability, salaries and what companies are asking for.
How we recruit data engineers
Many data engineering briefs combine several jobs. A founding data engineer might need to clean and structure messy data, build search tools and support AI and LLM work. Another role may sit somewhere between data engineering and data science. We agree what matters most with the hiring manager before starting the search.
We ask candidates to explain how they've taken data from its source through to something people use. For early stage roles, that can include a short written example from a real project, in their own words. Cloud skills often transfer well, so a strong AWS engineer won't always be ruled out of an Azure role.
Office expectations can shape the whole search. A small start up asking for five days in the office may lose strong candidates. Salary, commute and company risk all play a part. We raise these points early, alongside funding, runway and equity, so candidates know what they're considering.
Pay is discussed properly too. Some clients want exact figures to keep salaries consistent across a team. In those cases, we confirm total pay, including bonus, before sharing a candidate. We also check notice periods and visa status early, since sponsorship can affect the search.

Data Engineer recruitment insights
Cloud still makes up a large part of the market. AWS, Azure and Google Cloud appear regularly in briefs, alongside Databricks, Snowflake, Kafka and Airflow. Data engineers are also expected to do more than keep pipelines running. Many now help build reliable platforms that support reporting, product teams and wider business decisions.
AI has made good data foundations matter more. Businesses may want machine learning or AI products, but poor data still leads to poor results. Consortia is seeing more demand for engineers who understand data quality, governance and the systems needed to get AI projects working in practice.
Hiring has become more specific too. Employers often want people who have handled similar data volumes, business models or regulation. Experience in fintech, healthtech, SaaS, ecommerce and other data heavy sectors can carry real weight. Some problems are simply harder to learn on the job.
The hardest searches tend to sit at senior and platform level. There is more movement among mid level engineers. People who can lead a migration, rebuild an ageing platform or guide a major change remain harder to find.
The companies attracting them usually have a clear reason for hiring. They can explain what the engineer will own and where they can make changes. Senior candidates are paying close attention to the work itself, the technical direction and whether they will be trusted to improve things, rather than simply keep the platform running.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a senior data engineer to lead a platform migration?
Usually, yes. Moving to a new data platform involves design decisions, migration planning and keeping existing reporting running throughout. Mid-level engineers can deliver much of the work, but someone needs to have done it before. Senior engineers who can lead a migration are among the hardest data profiles to find, so it is worth starting early.
How important is sector experience for a data engineer?
It can carry real weight. Employers often want people who have worked with similar data volumes, business models or regulatory pressures, particularly in fintech, healthtech and ecommerce. Some of those challenges are slow to learn on the job. For more general platform work, strong engineering experience from another sector often transfers well.
What do senior data engineers want to know before joining?
They pay close attention to the technical direction, the state of the current platform and whether they will be trusted to improve it, not only keep it running. A clear reason for the hire and an honest view of the problems usually attracts stronger people than a long list of tools.
How can data engineers support our AI plans?
AI products depend on the data underneath them. Data engineers build the pipelines, quality checks and governance that make data reliable enough to use in models. Many also help put in place the infrastructure needed to move AI projects from experiments into production. Demand for engineers with that experience has grown.
