Overview

Some products are bought by engineers, shaped by engineers, or built on decisions only an engineer would notice. APIs, platforms, developer tools and data products all need a product manager who can go deep on the technical detail and still argue for the customer. That is the technical product manager.

We recruit technical product managers and technical product owners, including platform and API product managers, on permanent and contract terms. The titles are used loosely. A technical product manager usually decides what a technical product should do and why. A technical product owner sits closer to delivery, often leading one or two development teams and turning business requirements into work engineers can build.

How we recruit technical product managers

The word technical means different things to different clients. Some clients need a former engineer who can go deep on architecture. Others need a strong product manager who is comfortable with technical teams. The two pools are quite different, so we agree which one before the search starts.

Then we match on the kind of system. Running a product on a large legacy platform is different work from building a new API or sitting inside a data engineering team. We look for people who have worked on something similar, and ask what they decided and what the engineers decided.

We test how deep the technical knowledge goes. Can someone talk through a trade-off with an architect, challenge an estimate and manage dependencies between teams, then make the case for the customer in the same meeting? Client interviews for these roles often include engineers, so we prepare candidates for that conversation.

For contract roles we check availability, notice period and day rate on the first call, because timing often decides who can be considered. We recruit technical product managers across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

Technical Product Manager recruitment insights

Much of the technical product work we see at the moment is contract. A common brief is cover for a senior product manager who has moved onto an AI project or gone on leave, where the business needs someone who can pick up a complex system quickly.

Technical product manager is used less as a job title than it was, and more as a requirement. Few UK adverts use the exact title, while technical expectations have spread across product management generally.

AI is changing what technical means. More product managers now build their own prototypes with AI tools. For most teams it helps to decide early whether the role needs someone who builds, or someone who understands what is being built well enough to question it.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does a technical product manager need to have been an engineer?

Not necessarily. Some roles want a former engineer who can go deep on architecture. Others need a strong product manager who is comfortable with technical teams and products. The two pools are quite different, so it is worth deciding which you need before the search starts. We can help you work that out.

What is the difference between a technical product manager and a technical program manager?

Both are often shortened to TPM, which causes confusion. A technical product manager decides what a technical product should do and why. A technical program manager coordinates delivery across teams, managing dependencies, timelines and risk. The skills overlap, but the jobs are different, so the brief should spell out which one you mean.

How should we assess a technical product manager?

Ask them to walk through a real technical decision, such as an API design or a platform trade-off, and explain how they weighed it against customer needs. A coding test is rarely useful for this role. What matters is whether they can discuss trade-offs credibly with engineers and still make the case for the customer.

Should a technical product manager sit in product or engineering?

Usually in product, working very closely with engineering. If the role sits inside engineering, it can drift into acting as a proxy engineering lead or project manager. Keeping it in product helps protect the focus on customers and commercial outcomes, while the technical depth keeps conversations with engineers grounded.
