Overview

A product manager job description will usually cover discovery, roadmapping, prioritisation and stakeholder management. Most of the briefs we see include some version of those responsibilities.

What often matters more is the situation the person is joining. A product manager stepping into a team with a clear direction and established ways of working is taking on a very different role from someone joining a business that is still working out what the product should be, who it is for, or how the function needs to operate. The title may be the same, but the search for the right talent is not.

That has always been where we start. As specialist product manager recruiters, we have filled permanent, contract and interim roles since 2010, from a growing company's first product hire to senior positions in established product management teams.

How we recruit product managers

Every product manager search starts with the brief. We look past the title to what the business needs, what the person will own, and whether they are building something new or taking an established function forward. Most of the search is then direct. Many of the product managers we place were not looking when we first approached them, and would never have seen an advert.

When we assess product managers, asking how they prioritise usually produces a method. We learn more from a decision that did not work out, and what they did once they realised. It shows whether someone can hold a view, let it go, and say no to a stakeholder while keeping the relationship intact. We consider bias at each stage, and every candidate gets clear communication, proper preparation and honest feedback.

That approach lets us move quickly when it counts. Simply Business had already lost two weeks to a stalled project. We arranged interviews within 48 hours and had a product manager in place a week after the brief. Trustpilot had spent several months looking for a senior growth product hire before we refined the search and approached the right people directly.

Planning to hire a product manager? We can help you work through scope, level and salary before the search begins. Send us a brief or talk to one of the product team. Product managers can also view our product manager jobs, although many of the positions we fill are never advertised.

Product Manager recruitment insights

The strongest demand at the moment is for AI product managers, ahead of growth. Product managers in growth usually specialise in one area: subscriptions, retention, activation or onboarding.

In regulated and data-sensitive businesses, such as payments and property, clients want a product manager who already understands the compliance side of the product. That knowledge can take months to build, and most teams need the person contributing well before then which can make recruiting tricky.

Pay is worth checking early. Product managers who have stayed with one employer for years may well be paid below the market rate, and the gap only shows when they start looking. Advertised ranges can mislead too, because the figure in an advert is not always the figure people accept.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to recruit a Product Manager?

We usually have a shortlist with you within three to five days of the brief. From shortlist to accepted offer, the median for permanent hires is around 46 days, and it can be as quick as ten. Most of that time depends on the hiring side: how urgent the role is, how many people need to agree and how quickly interview feedback comes back. Contract product managers can often be in place within days.

What is the difference between a Product Manager and a Product Owner?

The titles overlap, and some companies use them interchangeably. In most teams we work with, a product manager owns direction: discovery, priorities and what gets built next. A product owner sits closer to delivery, managing the backlog and working day to day with engineers, often in Scrum teams. Some briefs genuinely need both in one person. Part of our work is helping settle which one a role actually describes.

Do you place contract or interim Product Managers?

Yes. We recruit product managers on permanent, contract and interim terms, and place fractional product leaders where the need is senior but part time. A contract product manager can often be in place within days, which suits cover, stalled projects and fixed-term delivery work.

Can you help with US or European Product Manager hiring?

Yes. Consortia recruits across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE, with teams in Bristol and Cape Town. Product manager searches often span more than one market, and compensation rarely translates directly between them, so we benchmark each search against its own local market. If you are hiring outside the UK, tell us where and we will send current benchmarks for that region.
