Pierre C. · AI Program Lead
Overview
You may have the data, the tools and even a few analysts, but no one senior deciding where it all goes. That is the gap a fractional Chief Data Officer or interim head of data fills. Consortia finds data leaders who can set direction, set up the function and build the team.
Companies building a data function for the first time are one fit. So are teams that need leadership while they recruit a permanent head, and businesses whose AI or analytics plans need a senior owner now. Expect the brief to cover foundations and governance, the first hires and mentoring, and a team that can run confidently once the engagement ends.
How fractional data works
Days, duration and the job itself come first. Is the leader there to build something new, or to fix what already exists? We settle that before matching anyone. It is one part of our wider Fractional Leadership service, backed by our permanent data leadership network if a full-time hire becomes the right answer. We cover data leadership in the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

Rates
What a fractional data leader costs
The cost of a fractional data leader depends mostly on where your data is today. A business working from spreadsheets needs something different from one with a platform and a team in place. Rates vary too widely for a table to be useful.
What shapes the rate
- Your starting point. Setting up a data function from nothing is different work from improving one that exists.
- Scope. Some fractional leaders set direction and governance. Others also build, or manage the people who do.
- AI. Many briefs now include advice on where AI is worth using, which calls for more specialist experience.
- Regulation. Sectors with strict rules on data, such as finance and health, need leaders who have worked under them.
- Days per week. Usually somewhere between one and three, shaped by the budget and the size of the job.
- Who you hire. Each fractional leader sets their own rate, usually around their other clients.
A rate range for your brief
Tell us where your data function is now and what you need from it. You'll get a realistic rate range based on current fractional rates. If an interim or permanent hire would suit the work better, we'll say so.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What can a fractional data leader do in a business with no data team?
Quite a lot. They can assess the data you already hold, choose sensible tools and platforms, set up basic governance and decide which problems data should tackle first. They can also plan and make the first data hires. That avoids expensive early choices made without senior data experience.
Can a fractional data leader help us get ready for AI?
Often, yes. They can assess whether your data is in good enough shape, identify realistic use cases, and put the governance and data quality checks in place that AI work depends on. They can also help leadership separate practical opportunities from ones that are not ready yet.
Should we use a fractional data leader or a data consultancy?
A consultancy usually delivers a defined project and then leaves. A fractional data leader becomes part of your leadership team, owns the function over time and builds capability inside the business. If you need a specific piece of work done, a consultancy may suit. If you need someone accountable for how data develops, fractional leadership is usually the better fit.
Can a fractional data leader help with data governance and protection?
Yes. They can set out who owns which data, how it is accessed and how quality is checked, and make sure data work fits your data protection obligations. They work alongside your legal advisers and any data protection officer rather than replacing them.
