Overview

AI is only as good as the data beneath it, and that’s keeping data hiring busy. Demand is growing for data engineers, and for the governance and data quality specialists who make AI projects possible in the first place. Explore more insights on data and AI hiring.

Consortia has recruited data talent since 2010, from a company's first analyst through to building a full data function. Data sits between Product, Engineering and UX, and we recruit for all three, so we know where data work meets the decisions it supports.

We cover the whole data function: data analysts and business intelligence specialists, data scientists and data engineers, machine learning and MLOps engineers, AI specialists, and the data leaders and CDOs who set direction. Permanent, contract, fractional or executive search, across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

Data recruitment insights

Clients are becoming less fixed on a single cloud platform. Where a brief once asked specifically for an Azure data engineer, more will now consider someone strong on AWS or Google Cloud who can cross-train, as long as the rest of their experience fits.

Roles are also changing. Machine learning engineers are judged on what they have run in production, and employers building LLM products increasingly want software engineers who build with models. Data scientists are expected to work end to end, from framing the problem to getting a model live, often in small teams.

Many teams now start with someone hands-on rather than a leader. The founding data engineer is a clear example: one person who sorts out messy data, builds from scratch or brings in better models, and grows the team from there. Where a business does need a senior data leader, the role may begin as fractional or interim.

How Consortia helps

Every search starts with a brief: what does the role actually need, and who would be the ideal fit? Job titles in data are loose. A strong analytics engineer might be sitting under a business analyst title, and a data engineer may now call themselves an AI engineer. So we pay less attention to the title and more to what someone has been working on day to day.

Our data network runs from analysts through to CDOs, and many of the people we placed early in their careers now hire through us. Seeing hiring across Data, Product, Engineering and UX gives us a grounded view of data pay ranges and candidate supply across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

Ways to hire

Ways to hire data talent

Some data needs are ongoing, some are a project, and some need a senior hand for a few days a week. We can help you pick the right route.

  • Executive Search

Retained search for technology leaders and hard-to-find specialists.

  • Contract Recruitment

Day-rate and fixed-term specialists for projects, change programmes and interim cover.

  • Permanent Recruitment

Permanent hires for specialist and leadership roles across technology teams.

  • Fractional Leadership

Fractional leadership for growth, change and key priorities.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a data analyst, a data scientist or a data engineer?

A data analyst answers business questions using the data you already have. A data engineer builds the pipelines and platforms that make that data reliable. A data scientist builds models to predict or explain what happens next. A common mistake is hiring a data scientist before the data foundations are in place, which can leave them doing engineering work they were not hired for.

Who should our first data hire be?

It depends on the state of your data. If the data is scattered and unreliable, someone with engineering skills usually comes first. If the data is in reasonable shape but nobody is using it well, a senior analyst who can also build some of the plumbing is often the better choice. A first data hire needs to be comfortable working without a team around them.

What is the difference between a data engineer and a machine learning engineer?

A data engineer builds the pipelines and platforms that data flows through. A machine learning engineer takes models into production, then handles deployment, monitoring and performance over time. The two roles overlap, and in smaller teams one person may cover both. As machine learning moves from experiments into live products, the distinction tends to matter more.

When should we hire a Head of Data or Chief Data Officer?

Usually once data spans several teams and priorities start to compete. Other signs include questions about governance or regulation, or large decisions about data platforms and spend. Before that point, a senior individual contributor or a fractional data leader can often provide enough direction, and help define what the permanent leadership role should look like.

How has AI changed data hiring?

AI has raised the value of clean, well-governed data, because models are only as useful as what they are trained and run on. That has increased demand for data engineers and for people who understand data quality and governance. Roles are also blurring, with machine learning and AI work overlapping more with software engineering. We keep a current view of how each role is shifting.

Which tools should we list in a data job description?

Keep it to the few that matter most, such as your data warehouse, orchestration or modelling tools. Strong data professionals usually move between similar tools without much trouble. A long list of every technology in your stack can put good people off and narrow the pool without improving the match. Describe the problems they will work on, and the right people will recognise themselves.
